5.10: He's Our You

WOW, WOW, WOW, my jaw about hit the floor at the end of last night's episode, I can't believe that actually happened!! This is the first episode this season that hearkens back to showing flashbacks of a character's past. It was interesting seeing Sayid as a kid, his nature seems much as it is today: he's a killer, but with the best intentions.

I really couldn't tell where this episode was heading until the end. When Sayid told James he had "found his purpose" in coming back to the island, I thought he meant getting killed in a shooting line would be a relief for him. But we saw throughout the episode the different ways Ben manipulated Sayid and others to his will and realizing the murders Ben had Sayid commit were only for the purpose of later forcing him to go back to the Island. It was funny that he asked the bounty hunter if they could catch the next plane after realizing all the Foundies were there.

I love that I didn't figure out who sent the burning bus until seeing young Ben creep out from the shadows. It just shows that even at the age of 12 he didn't care how many people he hurt or killed as long as he got his way. I had no idea what Sayid was up to when he knocked out Jin, only when he picked up the gun and admitted Ben was right about him being a killer did I start thinking "OMG he's gonna shoot the kid!" And he did, though you could tell it broke his heart to do it.

So what you think?? Does this change EVERYTHING that we know happens in the future? What will happen to current-Ben? Will the Dharmaites live or be wiped out by another traitor/Hostile?

While I thoroughly enjoyed the Sayid-shoots-Ben twist as well, I unfortunately don't believe it will go anywhere. The Lost powers that be have said before that what happened in history has happened and can't be changed with time travel and they've had Dan establish that as well. I don't really like that sci-fi interpretation of time travel because it doesn't really make sense since the moment you are back in time you have already changed things, but I can wave my hands at that and ignore it. Also, plenty of people on the island have been healed through gun shot wounds. I think young Ben is fine and nowhere near dead. If Sayid had wanted to be sure about it, he should have then shot young Ben in the head. Though knowing the powers of the island, Sayid probably would have been stopped by something if he attempted that.

I agree w. David. I waited for Sayid to deliver the head shot, but didn't happen.

Say what you will about Ben, he's no fool. I wouldn't put it past him to be wearing some sort of body armour. His powers of self-preservation may have manifested at an early age.

Oldham (William Sanderson). First time I've seen Larry (sans the Darryl's) since "Newhart". Then I checked him out on IMDB, and dude never stops working. Who knew?

Yeah, when Oldham came on, those lines just started going through my head of: "I'm Darryl, and this is my brother Darryl, and my other brother Darryl."

It wasn't exactly action packed, and if you go back and watch it again, you'll see the murderous intent in Sayid's eyes every time young Ben showed up.

The curious thing to me is, when Ben showed up to re-recruit Sayid - trying to convince him to kill for him again, insinuating that Sayid was a cold-blooded killer - was he speaking by observation as an adult, or was he REMEMBERING what Sayid did to him as a child? Adult-Ben had a curious, knowing look when he said, "Oh. My apologies then. I guess I misjudged you."

The boy is obviously not dead, or the Island will reinvigorate him. He has to grow up to commit genocide, taking the Island from both the DI and the Hostiles by leadership and manipulation.

Although... that would have been an interesting way to resolve the whole show. In the finale, events lead up to Sayid killing Ben in the far-reaching past, completely undoing the events that led up the plane crash. As the showed the bullet hole in Ben's head, the could do a super-fast rewind of events, restarting time with the plane flying low over the Island, and landing in Tahiti. Unbeknown to the passengers of Flight 815, the island is returned to its aboriginal inhabitants, and Jacob remains in seclusion. The camera pans to a remote dark place in the jungle. It eases slowly toward the old cabin. A lamp lights up just inside the window out of sight. Splash screen: *LOST*

Of course, there is a lot of information to fill in before we get that far, but it might be a cool ending.

I think if little Ben actually dies, there never would've been a plane crash because Desmond would've never been the one pushing the button/doing so late and causing the disturbance that brought the plane down in the first place. I agree that there's no way 'the island' will let little Ben die, ... I wonder how long the Losties will stay in the 70s. If it's long, then Ethan of the earliest episodes may have recognized all the plane passengers just like Ben. This time travel thing is bending my mind.. it just seems like a repeating circle... go back in time to hang out with little ben, Ben spends his whole life recreating situation to bring you to the island, so that you can go back in time, and hang out with little Ben again.

This "history is written" aspect of Lost does help explain Ben's motivations and knowledge. I think
they were trying to imply that Ben knew Sayid's true nature because he was a victim of Sayid's rage
as a child. Part of what Ben has been doing during the run of Lost is making sure these people end
up in the past since he knew about all this stuff that needed to happen and about what these people were like.

I don't think the show can end with none of the events having happened due to Ben dying so Ben must not die. Otherwise, the show would be pretty much done in the next couple episodes and we've got
what like 20 before the end in 2010?

Also, I really liked the shout out to Ann Arbor in this past episode. Made me want to go and try to
find secret DI files on campus...

arg, I think you guys are right that Ben won't die. That makes sense that Ben would have some major built-up resentment toward Sayid knowing he was shot by him as a kid. When I saw the episode I did wonder for a sec why he didn't go for the head shot...that would be too easy I suppose. Maybe Juliet is the one that saves young Ben, which is why older Ben is infatuated with her? I don't know if the Island would have anything to do with Ben surviving though...remember he got a spinal tumor while the Island was healing Rose of cancer and Locke of paralysis...
