5.05: This Place is Death

At long last, we see the return of the Smoke Monster! Well sort of...technically it happened in the past...but you know what I mean. I don't remember the last time we saw the SM, do you? Poor Danielle, man did she draw the short end of the stick. Friends being killed and dismembered by SM, then the ones left alive become brainwashed or "sick" as she called them. We definitely know for sure now that she wasn't making that up, since we witnessed w/ Jin her partner declaring his love for her, then trying to put a bullet between her eyes.

The reunion of Jin and Sawyer was cute, that was quite the genuine joy man-hug. :) So we finally got some answers about Charlotte's past, which should have been the tip-off that she was going to die. We never seem to learn any juicy details about anyone until the episode the character dies (remember Shannon?) Anyway, so Charlotte was raised as a child on the island, then ordered to leave and made to think she was crazy and had made up the island by her mom...nice mom. She said there was a "scary man" who told her to never come back or she'd die, and that man evidently was Dan. We know he goes back to Dharma time, we saw that briefly in the season opener. I'm guessing the next time flash will take them back to the Dharma period, and he'll see her as a child and scare the crap out of her then.

The interaction between Locke and Christian was...weird...not sure what else to say about that. Locke obviously doesn't keep his word to Jin by telling Ben that he's still alive and giving him Jin's ring. That was an interesting outburst from Ben in the van, he always remains so calm. I wonder if we'll ever find out "what he's done" to keep our Losties safe...from whom, Widmore? Thoughts?

The last time we saw the "smoke monster" was shortly after Keemy killed Alex in front of Ben. He went into his secret closet and somehow directed a very angry looking SM at the whole group of soldiers. Strangely, I think only one of the soldiers (if even one) was killed.

Yes, it does seem that Danielle has had it pretty rough, but to be fair, it seems like everyone on the island has had a long series of unfortunate events.

It is interesting that the smoke monster seems to dwell within that half-buried temple, and that is where the Frenchies acquired their sickness, if it is indeed sickness and not some other motive.

I wouldn't count Charlotte out just yet. People only stay dead on this show when it is convenient to"the island." Something tells me Daniel Fairday will have something to say about his new love dying when they are time-traveling.

I agree, the exchange with John and Christian Shepherd was weird. Somehow, I knew Shepherd would not help John physically, despite a really gross bone jutting out of John's leg. (Quick healing on the island is one thing, but that baby needs to be reset or it will heal out of place and useless.)

I think John obviously knew it would take his own "death" to bring our Un-losties back to the island. He gave the ring to Ben and told him what to say in order to keep his promise, but we all know Ben is not a person consumed with integrity, and he took advantage of the situation to manipulate Sun. John likely knew this would happen too, but at least he did not lie to Jin.

I don't know about you all, but I think this may be the best season of LOST yet. I don't know if we'll get another season or not, but I am enjoying this season more than I expected, even.

Would it be too much to ask for all of this time shifting to result in a better fate for Alex? Maybe a chance to turn the tables on Keamy. I could go for that.

The good news for Alex is that she seems to have turned up on "Cold Case". Not that I watch CC, but work is work, I suppose.

Yeah that would be nice if we could see Alex again, though the vindictive part of me liked that Ben paid the ultimate price for his smarminess (oh yeah, it's a word hehe). Robby's right though that people only stay dead some of the time, so you never know about Alex or Charlotte.

This season is totally rockin', though I loved last season w/ the flash-forwards too. As far as I know we'll get one more season after this, which is a pity but not really since hopefully it means there's a real end to the story and it's not decapitated like our beloved Alias was.

Like an old friend of mine was so fond of saying, "WOWZZERS!"

Tonight's episode was outstanding, if only a little slow moving in spots.

I'll wait a few days to comment so as not to spoil it for those who have not seen it yet.

This season has moved Lost up to a two-way tie with Battlestar Galactica as best show still on TV. BSG will be done at the end of this season, so LOST will firmly take the number one spot in my personal rankings.

Wowzzers, indeed! Quality writing week in and week out. Pity it will only run for Six Incredible Years.

Nobody thought to ask Benry what the hell happened to him? Either they don't care or they didn't notice the sling and the bashed in face.

It will be interesting to find out how Hurley, Sayid, and the Pilot ended up on the plane. And, surely, Desmond will have to go back, although he seems dead set against it.

It will also be interesting to find out "when" they arrived back on the island.

Great show, nothing on the horizon these days to replace it and BSG when they're gone.
