The End is Near...

BEWARE SPOILERS BELOW
****************************

Wow...well, what do you think folks? The last few weeks have been pretty interesting. Last week with killing off some beloved Losties (I still can't get over BOTH Sun and Jin...), this week finding out the history of Jacob and the "Man in Black," who we now know was his brother. We know Jacob's psycho mother and his brother are the Adam and Eve skeletons, that dead people appeared to the living as far back as their childhood (with their murdered birth mother), and that it's actually Jacob's fault for setting loose the Smoke Monster, who took the human form of his dead brother.

I can't help feeling a bit irritated at their mother's explanation of "The Light" that needed protecting. Is that supposed to be some sort of God entity down in the cave? And why would this pure light produce the Smoke Monster? I liked seeing the flashes of season 1 scenes with Jack and Kate finding the cave, I'm hoping they'll do that for the rest of the episodes to tie things together. But man, how are they going to bring it all to a close in no more than three hours left??

I don't think the smoke monster was its own living entity that took on the form of Jacob's brother...I think he still IS Jacob's brother, just in the form of pure energy. His body is dead, but his personality and consciousness still exists.

I only say that because Smokey has the exact same personality as Jacob's brother, even in Locke's form. I'm starting to think that Smokey is trapped on the island because he is made up of the energy trapped there. As long as there is someone there as a guardian, the energy is stuck there.

But he is still Jacob's brother, just not in the same physical form. Just my theory.

Still digesting and analyzing last night but, for all you 24 watchers...

Is it just me or is the man who plays the Man in Black a dead ringer for a younger President Logan? I swear the actors must be related as their voices are similar, the look the same and even their mannerisms are similar. I can't find any facts to connect them, but it's really bugging me.

Ahh interesting theory Paul! That could very well be since "Smokey" is obsessed with getting off the Island just like Jacob's brother. Funny how we never have heard his actual name...

And yeah Bonkers, I can see that resemblance!

OK, this theory is a little rough, but here goes:

Why did "mom" say 'Thank You' when the MiB killed her? Also notice that he killed her without a word, no chance to speak. I believe that "mom" was a smoke monster! How else could she have killed all those men, destroyed the well, and set their camp on fire by herself? She certainly wasn't a "good character" she killed an innocent woman and stole her children. I believe she was looking for release, hence the 'Thank You' when MiB killed her. I also believe she impersonated the dead mother to make MiB hate her, preparing him for this very purpose! The MiB mimicked her words exactly, "Men come...men destroy..." etc.

Now MiB becomes the smoke monster and is obsessed with getting off the island. He too is looking for a release, and the only way he thinks he can get it is if all the other candidates are dead. But what if he is meant to be replaced? Remember the Asian leader guy at the temple (sorry I can't remember his name) thought that Sayid would be able to kill Smokey if he "didn't let him say a word, and immediately stabbed him." Sayid is only alive (resurrected) because of the electromagnetic powers of the island! Could Sayid be a candidate to replace Smokey?

Personally though, the guy I like for the role is Sawyer. I also like Jack for Jacob's replacement. Jacob didn't want to leave, the island was his home. Jack doesn't want to leave. Smokey is obsessed with getting off the island and yet cannot. Sawyer has been obsessed with getting off the island since day 1, manipulates and connives to try to get off, and yet is the only major character who has been stuck on the island since the pilot. Add in the fact the constant power struggles between Jack and Sawyer, and Sawyer wanting to kill Jack, and I could see Jack and Sawyer being the new Jacob and MiB!

Just a theory, and a rough one, but I'm liking it! If so, we can probably expect Sawyer to kill Smokey!

Paul - I think this is a great theory! I also wondered how the "mom" destroyed that entire camp and the well by herself. If she really was smokey then it totally makes sense. The only thing that does jive is her imitating the dead birth mother, because if it was Smokey, then I would assume Jacob would have been able to see her too...

Remember that the Others called the Smoke monster a "security system." I think he is unwittingly, or unwillingly, a part of what protects the energy source, the black side of Jacob's white. Together they form a positive and a negative that contains the energy in the Island.

The reason I still think this "security system" description still applies is because, somehow, Ben was able to direct the Smoke monster's wrath at the soldiers who killed Alex. What he did to make it happen, I haven't a clue, but it happened on-screen so there's no denying it as a ruse made-up by the Others.

The smoke will never be able to leave the Island so long as someone takes the place of the white / positive force. I think this fits well with Paul's theory, also.

RE: Sawyer, however... I don't think you can say he always wanted to leave when he had many opportunities with Juliette during the three years they spend with the DI. He convinced her to stay with him on the island. That doesn't mean you aren't right about being the smoky-replacement... though, I think that would be too obvious, and the writers tend to go out of their way to not give us what we expect, even when it is the logical choice.

I still think Desmond will play a major part in resolving it all. Hang-on, folks. This is gonna be quite a ride to the finish line.

SRG,
I don't think it was the Smoke-ster who appeared as their birth-mother, even if fake-mother was also a column of smoke (which seems very likely, seeing the wide spread carnage on the human camp).

The actual spirits of the dead have been appearing all over the place, particularly to Hurley (look out, Hurley! don't become a smoke-dude!). There is no reason why we should think boy-in-black didn't actually see their birth-mother.

Anyone know what the schedule is for the last few hours? Two nights? Two weeks? all in one night? :D What are the dates and times... ?!

Entertainment Weekly says the finale is this Sunday at 8-10:30 PM CT and then later that night Jimmy Kimmel is doing a Lost special with the producers. I don't know the times on that. Maybe after the evening news?

Alright I've got the schedule info. ABC is going to show a series recap show from 7-9pm, then the actual series finale will be from 9-11:30pm. We're all gonna be sleepy on Monday...

Well folks, it's the morning of our last regularly-scheduled Lost Day ever...sniff...
