6.5: Lighthouse

I got into this episode a bit more than last week's. It was interesting finding out Jack had a kid in the no-plane-crash universe...of course we'll all be wondering who the mother is and if it's a fellow Lostie. If you remember from 1-2 seasons ago, Jack had to have an appendectomy on the Island, but in this universe he had it out at the age of 7. I wonder how that could have changed from the Island being blown up, so odd...

So can we all agree the Island Claire is a nutter now? I wonder if she actually got the "infection" Sayid has, or if she's just been brainwashed the whole time by the Smoke Monster/Christian/Locke "friend." I guess this revealed that the new Locke is the baddie now, since he lied to/brainwashed Claire as Christian and as her new "friend" about the Others taking Aaron. My bf called it that she was going to axe (literally) the Other dude even though he was telling the truth, but I didn't see that coming. It surprised me the same way I was shocked when Alex got shot in the head. I'm assuming Jin lied about the Others having Aaron to be sure that Claire would keep him alive to sneak into the Temple. Any other reason you think he lied?

The lighthouse was pretty cool. When they first showed the images in the mirror my bf thought it was a view into the alternate universe—which would have been pretty darn awesome. Ah well, a spyglass into their lives I guess will have to do. I totally didn't understand the preview for next week...we're only going to see seconds of the entire eppy? What do you think's going down at the Temple?

Jacob said he got Jack and Hurley away from the temple because bad people were coming. I'm wondering if the bad people are Claire, Smokey and Jin or Alana, Ben, Lapidus, Sun. Or are Dogen and his temple folks bad? Jacob didn't seem to respect Dogen's alleged authority. It's still not clear who is bad.

Jin may not speak or understand English well, but CRAZY is universal. He sure knew when it was time to lie to that nutcase replacement for Rousseau formerly known as Claire! I definitely think he lied so she wouldn't kill him.

Kinda think there is so strange link between Jack's son and Daniel Faraday because both want so badly to be concert pianists. Pretty sure David's mom is not Kate, but only Juliet, Libby, Penny, Ana Lucia are available as candidates. Not really sure here.

LOL "CRAZY is universal" no doubt!! Good point about Ilana and Ben's group also heading toward the Temple, forgot about that...

Also good observation of the connection between David and Daniel as pianists. That reminded me about seeing Dogen/Token/what's-his-name Other at the audition, though he seemed pretty normal (i.e. not crazy and trying to poison people). I think that might have just been a fun little random encounter though, not looking into it for meaning...

Let's not forget about Sarah, Jack's wife. In this alternate reality, it is distinctly possible that his wife did not leave him until after they had a son together. Clearly, the boy lives with his mother, who is now estranged from Jack. We do not know how long they have been separated, but I think it must be Sarah. If Helen is still with John, maybe Sarah and Jack stayed together a bit longer.

Maybe, perhaps... what if what we are seeing is the alternate life without the involvement/ interference of Jacob. If the bomb sunk the island back in the 70's, then Jacob never started injecting himself into the events of of the Lostie's lives. They changed more than just whether or not they crash on the island; they changed all of the influences Jacob has had in their lives, whether they knew it or not.

RE: Claire, I said out loud that she can't let the dude go. He already claimed he would "snap her neck" if Jin would loosen his ropes. There is nothing to prevent him from doing the same if she loosened them. He has willing to kill Jin, and probably Sawyer if they were able to catch him. I'm not convinced that she didn't do the right thing... if only in a sort-a psycho way.

What's curious to me is that John showed up to her tent, but where is James? He has always felt responsible for her since they went with John to the Other's barracks back with the ship arrived. I'm certain he'd like to know of her... uh... "well-being" (?). He has enough of an intimidating presence to explain to her what happened without putting up with stupid craziness. He surely wouldn't brook any talk of killing Kate for taking care of Claire's son off the island.

I don't have much to say about the Lighthouse. I'm still waiting on more information. I thought they threw in the explanation rather offhandedly.
"How did we never see this?"
"I guess we were never looking for it."
- It was almost a nod to the viewers from the writers to acknowledge the very first question that ought to come to mind when they came upon the lighthouse shortly after they passed by the Caves where they once took up residence.

Another link/ similarity: I thought it was Miles who talked to the dead, but now Hurley seems to have developed the same skill. Ever notice that the only person to beat Hurley at some type of competition (eg. ping-pong, basketball/ horse, etc.) was Walt - supposedly the gifted child who gave the Others more than they expected when they kidnapped him. (I doubt we'll see a full explanation of Walt's involvement.) I wonder if Hurley had it wrong about the numbers.

Maybe he had been influencing things around him by an unconscious force of will, and his negative thoughts about winning the lottery began to affect things also. I dunno. There are so many things that have yet to be explained. Simply calling someone "special" or "a candidate" is not enough for me. In order to suspend disbelief, I must have a little more.

There's no telling who the "bad people" are when it depends on who is saying it, what it will mean, and they never bother to explain what they mean on this show - and even more enraging is that no one demands an explanation for obscure and oblique statements of indeterminable weight. Grr.

It's wanting the whole puzzle to finally be seen in its fullness that keeps me coming back week after week. Having compelling characters helps, but they can't be as compelling as they could be if they would simply ask the questions that you or I would if we were there.
"What do you mean 'bad people?! I I've not decided whether you, yourself are good or bad."

Ah, well... When it comes to 9:00 PM on Tuesdays... if people are looking for me to follow their social graces and be mingling among their expectations, I'll be no where to be found. I'll be getting LOST.

Holy crap, I COMPLETELY forgot Jack was married! Yes you're right Robetron that the obvious mother of his son would be Sarah. I agree that because of the Island being submerged in the ocean in the alternate universe that Jacob did not visit any of our Losties, which would influence decisions and paths their lives took (ex: Boone leaving Shannon in Australia). What I can't believe is that it would affect when Jack got appendicitis (at age 7 vs. 30-something).

That's true that Claire prob killed the Other because she knew he'd kill her (like she said). I think James is there since he was with Locke in the cave, I just think the scene with John coming into her tent was so quick that we didn't see James outside.

Miles talks to dead people, but Hurley has always been able to see them. Remember at the loony bin when dead Charlie came to see him, and when he saw dead Anna Lucia as a cop pulling him over? I do think you're on to something about Hurley's mental state influencing the things around him since he told Sawyer "I'm the luckiest guy alive!" on the plane in the alternate universe.

I also wish the puzzle was coming together a little more rather than creating more questions. I loved my bf's idea about the mirror showing the alternate universe, that would have been a great segue (sp?) into some kind of resolutions, ah well. :) I'm w/ you Robby, in it til the end!
